Stapled Wraps. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1955. First edition. September, 1955 / Issue number 11 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 60 pp. About Very Good; pages 2&3 (i.e., one leaf) is loose but of course present; several small chips, one crease at back cover, small prior owner's sticker at top left page seven. Otherwise, this would be a Near Fine copy. This September / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was really starting to come into his own as the editor, a talent which would manifest itself better the ensuing year. Plenty inside to enjoy; a cover by the now famed Frank Kelly Freas, interior fanzine art by Lin Carter, Neil Austin, Cindy (Smith), and Jack Gaughan - no slouches themselves, and several cartoonists, all ably managed by Art Editor Cindy Smith. The articles and reviews. the meat of the fanzine, are a tour de force: Ron Smith, Lin Carter, Robert Lowndes, Larry Shaw, H.L. Gold, Sam Moskowitz, Robert Bloch, Dave Foley, Randall Garrett, Robert Silverberg, Dave Mason, and Bill Edgerton all contributing - see scan of contents page. Poetry, ads and other bites of interest, as well, of course. For the collector. Please review scans. l-pr1. Frank Kelly Freas (cover); Lin Carter, Neil Austin, Cindy (Smith), Jack Gaughan. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st American Edition. Original publisher's red cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Gilt decoration of a man on horseback fighting a dragon on front cover. 7" x 9 1/2." 180 pages, complete. Ten full-page, color plates by Byam Shaw, complete. Three additional pages in the back comprising the Glossary. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Pages have slight wear to the edges, slight age toning, and the occasional small mark or smudge in the margins. Covers have minuscule wear to corners and head and tail of spine. A Fine copy. A collection of legends as told in the form of the ballad. Each ballad, with the exception of two, came from Thomas Percy's "Folio MS [manuscript]" of his famous ballad compilation, Reliques of Ancient English Poetry (1765). Byam Shaw (1872-1919), also known as John Byam Shaw, was a British artist who worked in the disciplines of painting, illustration, and design. He used a variety of media such as oil paints, watercolors, pastels, and pen and ink. Not to be confused with his sons, Glen and James, who also used "Byam Shaw" as a surname. Introduction by Frank Sidgwick, in which he discusses the history of the ballad and the provenance of this book. Thomas Percy (1729-1811) was an Irish bishop and man of letters. His Reliques of Ancient English Poetry was derived from several sources. The following ballads are in this book: "St. George and the Dragon," "Robin Hood and Sir Guy," "The Boy and the Mantle," "The Marriage of Sir Gawaine," "Sir Cauline," "King John and the Abbot of Canterbury," "Chevy Chace," "The Rising in the North," "Northumberland Betrayed by Douglas," "Edom o'Gordon," "Mary Ambree," "Brave Lord Willoughby," "The King of France's Daughter," "The Winning of Cales," "The Children in the Wood," "Lord Thomas and Fair Ellinor," "Old Robin of Portingale," "A Ballad of Luther, the Pope, a Cardinal, and a Husbandman," "The Lady Isabella's Tragedy," "Margaret's Ghost," "The King of Scots and Andrew Browne," "The Braes of Yarrow," "The Heir of Linne," and "Sir Andrew Barton." Stiff boards. Condición: Good. MARKED RESTRICTED. Format is approximately 8 inches by 10.25 inches. vi, 564 pages, followed by a fold-out inside the rear cover. Decorative front cover. Cloth tape at spine. Appendix A--Standard fire-control symbols. Appendix B--Definitions. Appendix C--Standard Commands. Appendix D005-inch range table from O. O. 551. Much of the material has come more or less directly from publications of the Bureau of Ordnance. In addition, publications of the General Motors Corporation have been drawn upon in the case of the 20 mm. and Caliber .50 guns. Illustrations were prepared at the U.S. Naval Training Aids Development Center. Although the manual was prepared primarily for use at Naval Reserve Midshipmen's Schools, and represent the ordnance and gunnery curriculum of these institutions, its form permits easy addition or elimination of subject material so as to widen its scope of usefulness. Some copies were issued in loose-leaf binder form--this copy is tape bound without binder holes. Among the topics addressed are: Introduction to Weapons; Explosives; Gun Ammunition; Gun Assemblies; Turret Installation; Semi-Automatic Guns; Machine Guns; Small Arms; Bomb-type Ammunition; Fire Control; Gun Sight Principles; Sight Settings; Anti-Aircraft; Director Control; Torpedo Control; Spotting; and Sources of Information. Naval artillery is artillery mounted on a warship, originally used only for naval warfare and then subsequently used for more specialized roles in surface warfare such as naval gunfire support (NGFS) and anti-aircraft warfare (AAW) engagements. The term generally refers to tube-launched projectile-firing weapons and excludes self-propelled projectiles such as torpedoes, rockets, and missiles and those simply dropped overboard such as depth charges and naval mines. William Armstrong was awarded a contract by the British government in the 1850s to design a revolutionary new piece of artilleryâ"the Armstrong Gunâ"produced at the Elswick Ordnance Company. This marked the birth of modern artillery both on land and at sea. Turrets were weapon mounts designed to protect the crew and mechanism of the artillery piece and with the capability of being aimed and fired in many directions as a rotating weapon platform. This platform can be mounted on a fortified building or structure such as an anti-naval land battery, or on a combat vehicle, a naval ship, or a military aircraft. When gunnery ranges increased dramatically in the late 19th century, it was no longer a simple matter of calculating the proper aim point, given the flight times of the shells. Increasingly sophisticated mechanical calculators were employed for proper gunlaying, typically with various spotters and distance measures being sent to a central plotting station deep within the ship. There the fire direction teams fed in the location, speed and direction of the ship and its target, as well as various adjustments for Coriolis effect, weather effects on the air, and other adjustments. The resulting directions, known as a firing solution, would then be fed back out to the turrets for laying. If the rounds missed, an observer could work out how far they missed by and in which direction, and this information could be fed back into the computer along with any changes in the rest of the information and another shot attempted. The situation for naval fire control was highly complex, due to the need to control the firing of several guns at once. In naval engagements both the firing guns and target are moving, and the variables are compounded by the greater distances and times involved. Rudimentary naval fire control systems were first developed around the time of World War I. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.…
