The spine is a little chipped at the top and bottom. One inch piece missing from the front cover at the bottom left corner with the pages through to page 8 similarly affected. Small circular hole in the front cover to the left of the title. Small chip to the top right corner of the front cover. The pages are browned with blotchy yellow spotting in a number of places. Small tears to the top corners near the front and tears at the bottom corners through the second half.

A self-taught artist, he worked in factories and department stores before moving to Philadelphia where he edited and printed The Butterfly Quarterly with Margaret H. Scott, Alice Smith, and Amy Smith from 1907-09. In 1911 he was hired by Vogue and continued to supply illustrations and cover designs for the magazine until 1936.
