Paperback. Condición: Good. 1st Edition in This Form. 4 page sheet. Original Theatre Programme for The Merchant of Venice Performed at the Royal Lyceum Theatre March 1898 (lists 3 performances, so was for either 4th, 5th or 6th of March performance). Generally fair/good condition for a Victorian programme, i.e., no inscriptions,… has been folded in quarter and minimal staining (see scans). Notable for collectors as performance programme lists both Henry Irving as Shylock & Ellen Terry as Portia. Lists Henry Irving as sole lessee and manager of the Royal Lyceum but interestingly though he became the first actor ever awarded a knighthood, the programme does not list him anywhere as Sir Henry Irving. Though is does state "This Theatre is lighted by Electricity, supplied by the Electricity Supply Corporation, Ltd" as at this time Electric lighting was not common, Gas and oil lighting were common. Size: 17 x 21.5cm. Approx.

Two vintage borderless glossy black-and-white studio still photographs from the 1965 film, one with provenance stamp of film historian "Maurice Bessy" and layout annotations in manuscript pencil on the verso. Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of three legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his ear…ly play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Welles produced the play in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster, and Part 2 was never staged. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960, again without success. The later production became the basis for this film, in which Welles plays Falstaff. "Chimes at Midnight," as with nearly all of Welles' efforts as a director, was plagued by financial and logistical problems, shot with nearly no budget, and received no promotion and a very limited release. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and winner of two other awards at Cannes in 1966. 1) 10 x 8 inches, 1) 9.5 x 7 inches. Near Fine, light edgewear.

Five vintage studio still photographs from the 1964 film. Includes an intricate diagram of the process, "Electronovision," used to film the stage play. With sparse set design and a total absence of period costuming, director John Gielgud's ultra-minimal staging of "Hamlet" proved entirely new for New York audiences, and was ulti…mately wildly successful, achieving the longest run for the play in Broadway history at 137 performances. Actor Richard Burton received a Tony nomination for his performance as the tragic prince, and actor Hume Cronyn won a Tony for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play. A filmed version of the play was created by recording three live performances on the then-new technology of Electronovision and editing them into a single film. Although considered lost for many years, the film was rediscovered and restored in 1995 by producer and director Paul Brownstein. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Two vintage borderless oversize reference photographs from the 1948 film, both showing director and actor Orson Welles. One with the stamp of photographer Allan Grant on the verso, along with a number stamp and annotations in manuscript ink. Shot on a modest budget, with a very tight production schedule, Welles' "Macbeth" was la…rgely overshadowed by Laurence Olivier's much lauded "Hamlet," released the same year. After the film tested unfavorably in a few cities, Republic Pictures had Welles remove two reels and re-record the film, replacing the cast's Scottish burrs with the actors' natural voices. The original uncut version was restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Folger Shakespeare Library in 1980, and has since been reconsidered as one of Welles' most significant films. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Orson Welles and John Gielgud on location in Spain for the shooting of "Chimes at Midnight" in 1965. Shot and struck by noted photographer Nicolas Tikhomoroff, with his rubber stamp and the stamp of his Parisian agency, V.I.P., on the verso. "Chimes at Midnight," Welles' third of thre…e legendary Shakespearean adaptations and last masterpiece, is based on his early play "Five Kings," which condensed Shakespeare's War of the Roses cycle into one story. Vintage photographs from the set are rare. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and winner of two other awards at Cannes in 1966. 9.5 x 13.75 inches. Near Fine. In a lovely museum-quality frame with archival UV glass.
