Illustrated by Theyre Lee-Elliott, a prolific 20th century art-deco artist who designed logos for The Post Office and Imperial Airways. With 51 plates, 11 text illustrations and 2 maps, this work is an important and direct insight into the 'Oxford Exploration Club' expedition to Borneo, organised by Tom Harrisson. His fellow explorers included Edward Shackleton, son of the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton, and Patrick M. Synge, cousin of the Irish playwright. Together they spent six months living alongside the country's indigenous peoples, assimilating into an unknown and fascinating culture, even taking up residence in traditional longhouses decorated with chandeliers made from human heads.
