Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Illustrated hardcover with original pictorial dust jacket. Photographs by Richard L. Gunn and David E. Scherman. Book design by Harald Peter. Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 68-13303. An attractively produced Civil War anthology combining firsthand accounts, speeches, letters, poetry, historical commentary, and color photographs of significant American battlefields and monuments. Selections include writings by Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, Bruce Catton, and Stephen Vincent Benet. Organized chronologically from the sectional crisis through Appomattox, the volume presents both the military events and the personal experiences of the conflict. Especially appealing is its distinctive Hallmark Editions production: turquoise pictorial cloth boards with an extended Civil War battle engraving, Intertype Walbaum typography set at The Castle Press, and Hallmark Eggshell Book paper. Condition: Near Fine hardcover / Very Good dust jacket. The illustrated turquoise boards remain attractive, with minor edge and corner wear. Binding is sound and the interior pages are clean and well preserved, with light age-toning. The original dust jacket retains its printed $2.50 price and displays rubbing, surface scratches, edge wear, small chips and short tears, and some discoloration, most noticeable on the rear panel. An appealing vintage copy retaining its original jacket. The most interesting bibliographic feature is the book's unusually specific production colophon, which credits designer Harald Peter, identifies The Castle Press as typesetter, and names both the typeface and paper stock. Intertype Walbaum derives from the work of German typefounder Justus Erich Walbaum (1768-1839), giving this modestly priced Hallmark publication a connection to the history of fine typography. The photographic credits are also noteworthy. David E. Scherman was an American photojournalist associated with LIFE magazine, making the volume's visual contributors worth recognizing alongside its historical writers. The photographs of preserved battlefields contrast with the period engravings reproduced across the pictorial binding.…
