This book digs into the enduring conflict between the powers of the Church and the temporal authority of the French monarchy during the Middle Ages. The author examines a litany of canon laws and government edicts from the period, placing them within their historical context, and demonstrating the evolution of their interplay and influence on the French monarchy and its institutions. The author shows that while Francis I may have favored a policy of non-interference in Church affairs, preferring to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors Louis XI and Charles VII in their desire to limit papal influence in France, by the end of the 16th century, French monarchs had gained the upper hand and assumed control of the Church in France, with significant implications for the balance of power and the direction of the French state in the years that followed. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate legal battle that unfolded in 16th century France, pitting the powerful canons of Saint Martin's Church in Tours against the authority of the Archbishop and the crown. It meticulously examines the historical context, drawing upon papal bulls, royal ordinances, and court documents to reconstruct the events that led to this fascinating clash between ecclesiastical and secular power. The author deftly navigates the complex interplay of canon law, royal prerogative, and local custom, offering a nuanced exploration of the competing claims to jurisdiction and the profound implications of this dispute for the understanding of church-state relations in early modern Europe. Ultimately, this meticulously researched and engagingly written book sheds new light on the intricacies of power dynamics, religious authority, and the enduring legacy of ecclesiastical institutions in shaping the contours of French history and legal thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
