Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. xxviii, 409 pages. Illustrations. Endpaper maps. Index. Some edge soiling, stamp on bottom edge, some wear and soiling to DJ. John Stewart Service (August 3, 1909 February 3, 1999) was an American diplomat who served in the Foreign Service in China prior to and during World War II. He and other diplomats were blamed for the "loss" of China in the domestic political turmoil after the 1949 Communist triumph in China. In June 1945, Service was arrested in the Amerasia Affair in 1945. The prosecution sought an indictment for espionage, but a federal grand jury unanimously declined to indict him. Joseph W. Esherick (born 1942) is an emeritus professor of modern Chinese history at the University of California, San Diego. He is the holder of the Hwei-chih and Julia Hsiu Chair in Chinese Studies. Esherick received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley (1971). From 1933 to 1945, John Service covered most of China as an officer in the U.S. State Department. While serving under General Joseph Stilwell in 1944, Service was attached to the American Military Observers Mission to Yenan, Mao's headquarters, and thereby became one of the first official Americans to have extensive direct contact with the Communists. Lost Chance in China: The World War II Despatches is a compilation of reports from a prominent American diplomat. Service, a "China Hand," documented the rising power of Chinese Communists and predicted their victory, arguing for a more flexible US policy during WWII. The book features edited reports and dispatches from Service, providing eyewitness accounts of political situations, as well as analyses of the US-China relationship during the 1940s. It serves as a primary source documenting how US diplomats on the ground recognized the inevitability of a Communist victory, challenging the prevailing policies. Service was part of the Dixie Mission to Yan'an and was involved in the Amerasia Affair and subsequent McCarthy-era investigations. The book highlights the "lost chance" for the US to build a relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, which was ultimately derailed by anti-Communist politics and the support for the Nationalist government. First Edition. First Printing [per Random House convention].…
