It is a very interesting collection of poetry from an unjustly neglected British poet of the nineteenth century. There are translations from the Greek and Latin, as well as Light Verse and Parodies, and , I warrant some original works in Latin . Charles Stuart Calverley was an English poet whose considerable output consisted mostly of translations from the Latin, as well as verse in Latin, light verse and parodies. Indeed, his parodies of well-known poets (such as Tennyson) were quite popular in their day. Today, Calverley rests mostly in obscurity, a neglect due in part, possibly, to the perception that he never achieved his potential. But there are frequent flashes of brilliance in his work, as well as a good deal of wit. I feel his translations from the Greek and Latin to be of high quality. CONDITION - GOOD PLUS - This is a previously owned bok that is heavily foxed, else clean and presentable, the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The spine extremities are compressed and frayed, with top exhibiting the greater fraying; mild surface rub; joints display scattered spots of abrasion - else presentable with title still fairly bright. The boards display modest surface rub and abrasion; on the front, just discernible, are a few small, transparent water droplet splashes (of no appreciable import) and mild scattered spotting; corners are mildly bumped with attendant small splitting of cloth at tips; board edges are mildly worn. The rear board is similar to front with additional scuff marks near bottom; board edges are mildly worn. Text-block edges are foxed but clean; gilt top is well-rubbed. BINDING : Solid enough - pages open widely, while hinges are not cracked, binding thread is exposed at a few points . a gathering near the end of the book, containing pp 505 - 508, juts a bit from the tet block, else all is fairly solid, with no detached leaves. INTERIOR : The end-papers are heavily foxed; -- a small book plate is affixed to the fly-leaf - under the plate the paper was torn - this tear has been mended (an old, neatly effected mend); a small book store label is affixed to the bottom right corner of the front paste-down ( Gilbert & Field, Booksellers,67 Moorgate Street, London ). A small, old, dealer code is penciled at the top fore-edge corner of the front paste-down. There is partial splitting to the end-paper over the rear hinge. The text is Heavily foxed throughout - else clean. No writing or marginalia. No underlining. DUST JACKET : None present ( not clear that one was issued . ?)
