Octavo; engraved title-page, 81, [3]pp.; seventy-three engraved plates, on fortythree single-pages and twenty-five double-page plates, six double-page engraved maps. Recent speckled calf, covers panelled in blind, five raised bands and red morocco label with gilt lettering to spine. [London :] The Booksellers of London and Westminster Rare late edition of Seller?s Pocket Book, seemingly the text block of the Jeremiah Seller and Charles Price sr. printing, but with the title-page re-engraved to erase their imprint. This was presumably done at the end of the Seller and Price partnership, when the partners went bankrupt, circa 1707.   The Pocket Book is of notoriously difficult collation; it was first published in 1676 or 1677, and re-issued frequently thereafter to about 1707, with some of the composition due to the whim of the purchaser.   It was a handy pocket-sized vademecum for the gentleman. As described on the title-page, there are sections to answer all sorts of problems. The first section, not listed on the title-page, is calendar-related: tables for the twelve months, tables to find Easter Day, the New Moon, the day of the month, a perpetual almanac, sign of the Moon and so on.   The other principal grouping in this copy is geometrical and trigonometrical tables and diagrams. At the end is the set of maps of the World and continents, the Americas on two sheets, North and South America; these maps were also used in editions of Seller?s pocket atlases, the New Systeme of Geography [1684, and later], and Atlas Terrestris [ca. 1685, and later]. One of the rarest plates is ?A Generall Description of the several Parts of Fortification?   Reference: this edition is unrecorded in ESTC but cf. R16068.…

Copperplate engraving, 425 x 520 mm. The paper a little soiled. [London : Mount & Page, Uncommon English chart of the much of the western coast of Africa, extending from near Cape Verde to just beyond the Cape of Good Hope. The plate is orientated with north at the left, which allows the coastline to fit neatly onto the plate. The plate was prepared at the end of John Seller's career; it was later used in two volumes of The English Pilot, the Fifth Book for Africa and the Third Book, the Oriental Navigation, this example having been issued in the latter.…

First Edition, Folio (448 x 285 mm), 24pp. of text, complete as published, ending abruptly on page 24, with the catchword: "This", coastal profiles and three woodcut charts set in the text, no more published, the text disbound, no engraved charts present. London : John Darby sr. for John Seller sr.,  John Seller is a pivotal figure in the history of the British map and chart trade. When he started in trade, chart publishing was dominated by the Dutch. One of the ways the Dutch maintained their ascendancy was by producing editions of their atlases in Latin (the universal language of the period) or vernacular languages such as French and English, making it difficult for French and English publishers to compete. However, Seller was determined to challenge the Dutch primacy, writing in 1669, "Courteous Reader, These may be to inform you, that whereas being frequent complaints made that the English hath not as yet manifested that forwardness in the promotion of things of public concernment, for the general benefit of Navigation . and gives advantage to our neighbours the Hollanders to be furnishing us with Waggoners, Charts and Draughts . Therefore (worthy Gentlemen) I do hear make known unto you, that I intend, with the assistance of God, and am at the present upon making (at my own cost and charge) a Sea Waggoner for the whole World, with Charts and Draughts of particular places, and a large Description of all the Roads, Harbors and Havens, with the Dangers, Depths and Soundings in most parts of the World .". The resultant pilot book was used under the heading 'The English Pilot', with separate volumes for the Northern Navigation, 1671, for European waters north and east from the Thames Estuary, and the Southern Navigation, 1672, for European waters from the Thames Estuary round to the Straits of Gibraltar. At the same time, Seller also produced his 'Coasting Pilot', 1672, for British waters, and 'Atlas Maritimus', 1675, a sea-atlas of the world.   The rapidity with which Seller tried to produce these different volumes clearly over-stretched his resources; the next completed volume of the 'English Pilot', the Mediterranean volume, appeared in 1677, jointly published by Seller with John Thornton, William Fisher, John Colson and James Atkinson, with Seller announcing "that for the better Management of my so chargeable and difficult an undertaking, I have accepted the assistance of my worthy Friends, Mr. William Fisher, Mr. John Thornton, Mr. John Colson, and Mr. James Atkinson, as my Copartners in the English Pilot, Sea Atlas and in all Sea-Charts, Plain and Mercator ."   Seller also began work on two further volumes of the 'English Pilot' in 1675; unfortunately, neither were completed, both surviving only in fragments, and Seller never returned to them. The first was 'The English Pilot The Fourth Book' recorded in one copy only, without title-page; the second was this volume, 'The English Pilot. The Third Book. . the Oriental Navigation.'   The 'Oriental Navigation' survives in six recorded institutional copies with 24pp of text (as here) and a varying chart count, of between seven and eighteen charts, these generally drawn from the charts engraved for the 'Atlas Maritimus' pressed into service, while this text is without any engraved charts. There are, however, three woodcut charts set in the text: St. Augustine's Bay on Madagascar, the island of Anjouan in the Comoros group, and Grand Baie on Mauritius, as well as a good number of coastal recognition profiles.   The 'Oriental Navigation' was the first attempt by an European publisher to produce a pilot book for the waters of the Far East, and is of the first importance for that reason, and an item of considerable rarity.   ESTC R473705; Verner, Bibliographical note to the TOT Facsimile of the 1703 John Thornton Edition. …

Folio (475 x 305 mm), [ii], 96pp, 22 engraved charts, most double-page, two engraved text illustrations, many woodcut harbour charts and coastal profiles set in the text. London: Mount & Page [William and John Mount, Thomas Page (II) and Thomas (III)], Uncommon late printing of the 'English Pilot' volume for the 'Southern Navigation', for the use of mariners in European waters, covering the coasts from Scotland southwards, with the Atlantic coasts of Ireland, France and Spain round to the Straits of Gibraltar.   This was the principal English pilot book for the region for the period. This copy was published during the Seven Years' War, when fears of a French invasion were at their height, and covers those areas most likely to be the scene of naval actions or landings.    The chart composition of the book can vary between copies; this copy is without the chart of the Forth of Forth and two charts of the Dutch coast found in some editions, but has an additional chart of the 'Westerne Islands'. ESTC records three American locations; Adams and Waters add the National Maritime Museum and two further American locations. …

London : Mount & Page, 1758; London : Mount & Page, 1758; London : Mount & Page, 1756; London : Mount & Page, 1753; London : Mount & Page, 1753; London : Mount & Page, 1755; London : Mount & Page, 1759. Apparently unique compilation of the six constituent volumes of the English Pilot bound in two, lacking all the inserted charts, but the text complete, retaining the engraved charts in the text (notably in the 'Fourth Book': Antigua, Barbados and Bermuda), with the woodcuts and engravings in fine original wash colour. There is no indication of the charts having been removed; it may be that they were originally bound separately or not purchased at all. The individual volumes of the English Pilot series were the best available English chart books for much of the eighteenth century. The series was begun by John Seller in 1671, with the Northern Navigation, and 1672, Southern Navigation and subsequently expanded by Seller, his successors and heirs with the Mediterranean Pilot (1677), West-India Pilot (1689), West African Pilot (1701) and Oriental Navigation (1703). As a working book, individual editions of the various volumes can be rare. This group, put together at the time of the Seven Years' War / French and Indian War contains several rare printings, but the real significance is the assemblage of the volumes together and the exceptional original colouring throughout, these volumes clearly intended for library use, hence the colouring and fine internal condition.   Locations: Coasting Pilot (title-page only): ESTC N44114: only Folger Shakespeare English Pilot Southern: apparently unrecorded, but cf. ESTC N47593. Northern: unrecorded in ESTC. Mediterranean: ESTC N69402: recording the Yale and New York Public Library copies, to which can be added a copy in the National Maritime Museum. West Africa: unrecorded in ESTC; with a copy in the National Maritime Museum. Oriental Navigation: ESTC T218365: recording the Cambridge and National Maritime Museum copies. West India Navigation: ESTC N69401: recording only the Yale copy, with further copies in the Library of Congress and Dartmouth College Library. …
