Für die Vertonung der Lieder sorgte Thomas Selle (1599-1663), der seit 1641 als Kantor am Johanneum und director musices an den Hamburger Haupt- und Nebenkirchen sowie seit 1642 zudem als Domkantor wirkte. Damit knüpfte Rist an eine Kooperation an, die er bereits im Zuge der Erarbeitung der Sabbahtischen Seelenlust (1651) gepflegt hatte. Die Festandachten bieten neben recht umfänglichen Vorreden und zahlreichen Ehrentexten 52 Lieder zu den Festtagen des Kirchenjahrs unter Einschluss der Aposteltage und der Marienfeste (Mariae Reinigung, Verkündigung, Heimsuchung, Geburt Mariae) bis hin zum Luther-Tag (10. November), zum Gedenktag der Überreichung der Confessio Augustana (25. September) und dem Danklied für die Verdeutschung der Bibel.
