Er war einer der wenigen Großen der Musikwelt, die ausschließlich in den USA ausgebildet wurden, un…d der erste Amerikaner, der es als Dirigent zu Weltruhm gebracht hat. Thomas R. Seiler lernte Bernstein Anfang 1981 anläßlich einer Generalprobenfeier in München kennen. Die in der Folgezeit gemachten Fotos gefielen dem Künstler so gut, daß er dem jungen Fotografen anbot, ihn als inoffizieller Fotograf zu begleiten. Entstanden ist ein eindrucksvolles fotografisches Portrait, das die letzten zehn Lebensjahre Leonard Bernsteins auf seinen Reisen in Europa festhält. Seiler begleitete Bernstein an die wichtigsten Spielorte in Europa (Schleswig Holstein, München, Paris, Wien) und beobachtete ihn durch die Linse des professionellen Fotografen wie auch mit den Augen eines Freundes. Die Bilder zeugen von großer Vertrautheit und gegenseitigem Respekt - Bilder, wie sie von Bernstein noch niemals veröffentlicht wurden. Ergänzt werden diese Fotografien durch zahlreiche persönliche Erinnerungen wichtiger Zeitgenossen und Freunde Bernsteins, wie etwa Isaac Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, Thomas Hampson, August Everding, Hildegard Behrens, Christa Ludwig, Michael Tilson Thomas, Alexander Bernstein u.v.a.
