Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intriguing world of the Carbonari, a secret society that emerged in Southern Italy during a period of political upheaval and social transformation. The author explores the origins, rituals, and political aims of this enigmatic group, shedding light on their role in the broader context of European history. While the Carbonari's existence was known for years, the revolution of July 1820 brought them into the spotlight, revealing their intricate network and clandestine operations. The author meticulously examines the Carbonari's symbolism, drawing upon their own documents and publications to unravel the layers of meaning embedded in their rituals and practices. This book offers readers a captivating journey into the heart of a secretive organization that sought to challenge established power structures and advocate for ideals of liberty, equality, and national independence. By exploring the Carbonari's beliefs, motivations, and impact on Italian society, this work provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of social movements and the enduring quest for freedom during a turbulent era. The author's meticulous research and engaging narrative style make this book an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of secret societies, the struggle for Italian unification, and the broader currents of European political thought. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

16mo. [4 pp (unpaginated)], printed on thick light sage-green card stock, couple text decorations (very slight dustsoiling), still NF piece. First edition of this dance card listing the 10 musical pieces for the evening conducted by the Russell Orchestra, and the 11 dances consisting primarily of quadrilles, and 1 waltz for the evening. The United American Mechanics was originally founded as a virulent anti-Catholic America first secret society by many former, and unlike other Nativist societies survived the Civil War, primarily by offering it's membership insurance benefits. They required their members to publicize and patronize "American" businesses, and campaign against the hiring of cheap immigrant labor. Often these social occasions acted as fundraisers for the organization. See: History of Worcester County, Massachusetts, Vol. I, p. 300.

First edition. Very unusual and attractive little publication which seems to identify the secret societies at Columbia U, listing members by year beginning in 1883 and ending in 1886. Phi Gamma Delta is printed on the rear, and internally are listed Lambda Chapter of Psi Epsilon, Delta Chapter of Delta Phi, and Alpha Chapter of Delta Psi. This engraved illustrations are quite nice, full of symbolism and intrigue. We find no mention of this pamphlet in OCLC. 22.5x15cm [8]pp including covers. Illustrations. Saddle stitched in illustrated wrappers, wraps detached, few spots and stains else very good.

Interesting I.O.O.F. archive from the Jeptha Lodge 100 in Clayton, Illinois, the earliest date being 1857 and the latest, 1941. The visitor's register has approximately 15 pages of entries spanning those years. The earliest date in the membership directory/ledger is 1869. The latest of the three is the secretary's ledger, with the earliest dated entry being 1896. According toThe Ark, and Odd Fellows' Western Magazine,1852: "Jeptha Lodge, No. 100, was instituted at Clayton, Adams county, February 13, 852, by D.D.G.M. Levi Stillman, assisted by brothers from Mendon and Columbus Lodges. This shows the advance of the Order in Illinois for the past two years. .Who that knows its intrinsic excellencies, and understands the heaven-born principles of Odd Fellowship, will not say with one of old, 'The Lord increase you an hundred fold, however many ye may be!'" A fascinating set of materials from a time of great growth in America for the order. . Three manuscript log books: Visitor's Register, Membership Directory and Ledger, and Secretery's cash book/ledger. Generally fair to good, with the directory lacking front cover, rear cover detached but present. Guest book and secretary's ledger with boards heavily worn and rubbed, binding shaken but holding. Contents generally clean, with occasional staining.

First edition. Rare 1617 debate on the alleged hidden practices of the Jesuit order, featuring Jesuit economist, Adam Contzen (1571-1635), and issued at Mainz on the eve of the Thirty Years' War. This publication is part of the early "secret Jesuit" narrative, and a response to the controversy caused by the publication ofMonita secreta Societatis Jesua few years prior. These arguments and counterarguments would reverberate for centuries in Jesuit conspiracy literature, representing one of the earliest efforts to cast the order as a clandestine "secret society.". 8vo, [4], 190pp. Modern, fine binding of full pigskin with black lettering and design, and gilt accents, marbled endpapers, page edges speckled red. Inner margins tight in several places, but no loss of text. A neat and clean copy internally in attractive binding.

Hard Cover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Stated at copyright: "Entered according to Act of Congresss in the year 1873 by Gen'l. J. W. Phelps in the office to the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D. C." This first edition volume features second book following first, which is edited by H. L. Kellogg: "College Secret Societies: Their Customs, Character, and Efforts for Their Suppression," with 1874 date at its title page. Original dark brown cloth boards with blind-stamped decorative borders at front and back, rubbed gilt spine titles, moderate shelf wear, bump, discoloration. Pages generally very good, clean with light toning. Antiquarian stamp at title page: "For Sale By: The National Christian Association, 221 W. Madison Ave., Chicago." Patterned gold and cream floral endpapers. Bind good, moderate cant. Rare first edition in original cover and bind with clean interior. Statement at title page: "By correcting the infirmities of popular Government, it will prevent the disgust against that form which may otherwise produce a sudden transition to some very different one. It is no secret to any attentive and dispassionate observer of the political situation of the United States, that the real danger to republican liberty has lurked in that cause." - James Madison. The Madison statement would seem to indicate that the regular transition of representatives and executives in America's government was vulnerable to manipulation, corruption and alteration, especially from secretive groups and entities as General Phelps presents here. Be a man and not a minion. John Wolcott Phelps born November 13, 1813 was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, an author, an ardent abolitionist and a presidential candidate. Phelps also translated a related titles to this volume: Lucien de la Hodde's "The Cradle of Rebellions: A History of the Secret Societies of France." Phelps was the presidential candidate for the Anti-Masonic Party in 1880 with running mate Samuel C. Pomeroy of Kansas. The Phelps/Pomeroy ticket ran on the prohibition of alcoholic beverages, prohibition of all secret lodges, justice for Indians, and demanding the Bible be a required text in all educational institutions, etc. "Table of Contents. I. The Antiquity of Secret Societies; II. The Life of Julian; III. The Eleusinian Mysteries; IV. Origin of Masonry; V. Was Washington a Mason; VI. Fillmore's and Webster's deference to Masonry; VII. A brief outline of the progress of Masonry in the United States; VIII. The Tammany Ring; IX. The Credit Mobilier Ring; X. Masonic Benevolence; XI. The uses of Masonry; XII. An Illustration; XIII. First edition of a classic and frequently reprinted work, edited by the historian Xiao Yishan and based on manuscripts he unearthed in the British Museum in the early 1930s. The copious illustrations, which include diagrams of Hung Society hand signals and meeting places, reproduce material in the museum's collections and plates from Ward & Stirling's 1925 The Hung Society. "The foundation of genuine scholarly research into the origins and history of secret societies was laid by Xiao Yishan and Luo Ergang, the representatives of Republican period scholarship in the 1930s" (Bolton & Hutton, p. xxii). Kingsley Bolton & Christopher Hutton (eds), Triad Societies: Selected Writings, 2000. 6 parts in 4 vols, octavo. With 7 colour plates (4 folding), 8 folding plans and diagrams, illustrations in text. Text in Chinese. Original buff wrappers, white thread xianzhuang stitching, front covers lettered in black. Housed in original blue cloth folding case, bone toggles, yellow title label. Contemporary Beijing bookseller's ink stamp on verso of final plate in Vol. IV. Edges lightly foxed, couple of short closed tears internally: a near-fine copy in very good case, with sunning and one toggle split.
