Hardcover. Condición: Near fine. Limited Edition. Small square octavo, 259pp. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, in contemporary red marbled boards with red morocco spine, titled in gilt. The cheap, acidic interwar European paper is inevitably age-toned. One of a large and unstated number of copies SIGNED by Schwerke on the limitation page, this being number 4,800. This copy additionally INSCRIBED by Schwerke on the opposite leaf in French: "Pour mes chers amis Helen et Fred - en souvenir de tant de bonnes heures passees dans leur compagnie--Irving. 5 IV 60 Appleton, Wis." ["For my good friends Helen and Fred - in memory of so many happy hours spent in their company."] We could not identify the Leonards, though their lightly penciled address in Orlando, Florida appears on the previous leaf. Schwerke was born and died in Appleton, but in the meantime spent many years in Paris and other European cities as a jazz critic and music writer. His obituary notes that he was acquainted with Hemingway and Fitzgerald and other bright stars of 1920s Paris.

Condición: Good. Small 8vo. 13 x 20cm. Original blank dust-wrapper over cover. Physical Description:[8],114 pages.OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:1269551. Aleksander (or Alexandre) Tansman (b. ?ódz, 1897; d. Paris, 1986) was a composer, conductor, and pianist. He studied at the Lodz Conservatory (with Piotr Rytel) and took courses in law and philosophy at Warsaw University. In 1919 he settled in Paris where he met the leading artists of his time, including Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, and others. As a pianist he toured Europe, Canada, and the Middle East with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Serge Koussevitzky. His music was performed by the most famous soloists and ensembles of his time; his champions included conductors Stokowski and Toscanini. During this stage of his life, Tansman frequently described himself as "un compositeur polonais" but spoke French at home with his French wife - a talented pianist, Colette Cras - and two daughters (Tansman's first wife, also French, died early in their marriage). Returning to Warsaw was not an issue because of marriage and career requirements. Tansman was a world-famous virtuoso who frequently performed with the greatest orchestras and conductors, mostly based in France. .After Hitler's rise to power, the composer gradually reclaimed his Jewish roots.
