Jordan with assistance from and an essay by Sarah Schroth. This valuable catalogue of a touring exhibition focuses on 46 paintings by 15 artists. It casts fresh light on a period and an art form unfamiliar to most, even to fans of Dutch still life. The Spanish school had a wealth of styles; miles separate Francisco de Zurbaran's stark symmetries from Van der Hamen's lush cosmopolitan concoctions. Añadir al carritoTrade Paperback. Condición: Used - Very Good. The renowned artist Irwin Kremen's collages, paintings, and sculptures are composed from such diverse materials as scraps of weathered paper, wasp nests, saw blades, and steel. 'Irwin Kremen: Beyond Black Mountain (1966 to 2006) 'is the exhibition catalog accompanying a retrospective covering forty years of the artist's career. The work will be on display at Duke University's Nasher Museum of Art from March 22, 2007 through June 17, 2007. A longtime North Carolina resident and Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Duke University, Kremen studied literature and writing with M. C. Richards at the legendary Black Mountain College in the mid-1940s. There he met John Cage, David Tutor, and Merce Cunningham, all of whom became close friends, artistic inspirations, and ardent supporters. Kremen did not show his work publicly until a 1978 exhibition at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art featuring mostly small non-representational collages. In 1979 his works were exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution's National Collection of Fine Arts, where they were received enthusiastically; the 'Washington Star' heralded him as 'an American master of collage' on the level of 'Robert Motherwell, Anne Ryan, and Romare Bearden.' Since then, Kremen's work has been shown in nearly thirty shows in the United States and abroad; favorably reviewed in the 'New York Times,' 'Washington Post,' 'Artforum International,' the 'Chicago Tribune,' and 'Art News'; and acquired by museums and private collectors across the country. The catalog includes full color illustrations of more than 100 of Kremen's collages as well as twelve sculptures and three monumental pieces made over the past decade in collaboration with the Duke art professor William Noland. 'Published in conjunction with the exhibition 'Irwin Kremen: beyond Black Mountain (1966 to 2006), ' Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, March 22-June 17, 2007'--T.p. verso.

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: VG. First Edition. Black & color illustrated wraps with white and lime green lettering. 352 pp. Profusely illustrated in color. Issued in conjunction with several 2008 exhibitions. "Provides a glimpse into the little-known artistic world of Philip III's Spain (1598-1621). This was a time of cultural and poltiical vitality in the Spanish monarchy, as the king and his court 'issued in a new style of grandeur' (in the words of their contemporary Gil Gonzalez d'Avila) -- where gala celebrations, building campaigns, and picture collecting were the order of the day. The art of the period saw the birth of a naturalistic style, reflected in a new attention to detail and space in court protraiture, the flourishing of still life, the humanizing of saints, and the development of polychrome sculpture. The book explores the careers of the mature El Greco and the young Velazquez and examines the work of lesser-known and highly talented artists who exerted a critical influence on the development of Spanish painting." -- dj description from hardcover copy.

Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. The Museum's website noted: 'This groundbreaking exhibition examines a fascinating period (1598 1621) bracketed by the two giants of Spanish painting, El Greco and Velázquez. Discover the masterpieces of Philip III s court and the artists who flourished during his reign. To separate themselves from Philip II s approach to governing, Philip III and his court "issued in a new style of grandeur" (in the words of their contemporary Gil González d Avila), where gala celebrations, elaborate religious fiestas, building campaigns, and picture collecting were the order of the day. Much of the art produced at and for the court reflected this style, replacing the austere art created for Philip II with a more naturalistic and emotionally expressive art that became the hallmark of Philip III s reign. "El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III" features paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts including a partial recreation of the camarín of the Duke of Lerma, the most important non-royal collector in Europe at the time and the favorite of Philip III organized around themes such as portraiture, religion and the court, and the birth of still life. Learn more about the contemporary Spanish works in the complementary exhibition "Antonio López García," which was on view Apr 13 Jul 27, 2008". In exceptionally good condition.
