Trade Paperback. Condición: Near Fine. Second Printing. 387 Pages. Tight bright book. Owner's name label on first title pge. No other marks or stamps. The author was born in Vienna in 1907 to parents whose Jewish ancestors had been living there for countless generation and grew up in the atmosphere of a happy childhood. His Euro…pean education included earning a doctor's degree in 1934 from the University of Vienna. Like his father, and about two thirds of the Viennese, Albert adopted the cause of democratic socialism. At that time austro-facism had crushed the last vestige of democracy and he was fired from his appointed civil service job, he was barred from further career advancement. In turn, he became one of the leaders of the anti-facist underground movement. The Nazi authorities later fired him because of his Jewish background and three days before his imminent arrest, he escaped to Switzerland and later to the United States Schrekinger's story is a fascinating account of one person's escape from the Nazi holocaust. His adventures and process of Americanization are poignant, humorous, sad and happy. Now in his final years he reflects on his past life and the injustices he's seen and suffered and expresses a hope for the future. Readers will find both his life and message inspirational. Contents in Eight Chapters: A Young Life in Old and New Vienna, Young Love Hard Work and Shattered Dreams, Risky Living in the Twilight, Exile and Pilgrimage, Discovering America, Becoming an American, Family Life and Professional Career, and At Home in Lincoln Nebraska.
