"Die verskyning van die eerste druk van hierdie werk teen die end van 1922 het aanleiding gegee tot 'n letterkundige oorloggie, waarin selfs nou nog 'n paar verdwaalde skote afgevuur word. Met al sy gebreke - wat ek graag wil erken - het die werk in elk geval geprikkel tot meerdere belangstelling in ons letterkunde. Baie van die menings wat in 1922 so rewolusionêr gelyk het, word vandag in breë kringe erken, en ofskoon ons, gelukkig maar! op hierdie gebied nooit eenstemmigheid sal of wil bereik nie, kon ek as gevolg van die ontwikkeling van die laaste jare minder polemies optree. Om dieselfde rede het 'n groot gedeelte van my kritiek op taalgebied weggeval. Hierdie soort aanmerkings kan ons nou gerus aan ons onderwysers oorlaat.".
