Unique album of wine and spirits bottle labels. Maquette for an unfinished project. We offer an album of printed specimens, containing easily more than fifty examples, of colorful bottle labels of the firm of Anton Riemerschmid of Munich, as well as a few other types of graphic design, namely a book cover, lovely gift paper, a change of address card for the firm, and some other "Kleingraphik" such as monograms and bookplates, either representing the work of the Munich artist Eugen Julius Schmid for the Riemerschmid firm or commissioned by them for a prospective book. Given that there are extraneous pieces in the album not connected to the Riemerschmid firm, the former seems more likely, or perhaps a mixture of the two. The labels represent an amazing range of alcoholic products and of graphic approaches to the design problem. Eugen Julius Schmid (1890-1980) taught typography and graphics at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Munich. Album is undated, presumed to date from the 1920s-1930s. There is a cover label reading "Wein Etikette / (Werbung) / Entwurf / E. Julius Schmid." At the beginning are a few blank pages marked "Titel" and "Text" and at rear are a photograph of bottles and four pages with layout sketches. A few labels are laid in loosely. Schmid was the subject of articles in the journal Gebrauchsgraphik in the early 1930s.
