Her girl's school became one of the most notable institutes of education for women in the NetherlandsLong live Penélopé!" This was the closing remark of a book review in an issue of the Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen from 1833.1The enthusiastic (anonymous) reviewer was referring to the successful magazine Penélopé, or monthly work dedicated to the female sex, which had already been published for over ten years by the Amsterdam publisher G.J.A. Beijerinck and edited by theauthor and boarding school owner Anna Barbara van Meerten-Schilperoort (1778-1853). This magazine would go down in history as the first successful Dutch women's magazine, and rightly so: it would serve as a model forall subsequent women's magazines.
