Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD, up until 1933 'same date' on title page and verso with no later printings is the identifier of first editions for Alfred A. Knopf). The copyright page also states 'Published, April, 1924.' The book is rated Good due to the thin stain on the front cover. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The label on the spine has a small scuff off its top edge. The spine ends have the usual crinkling. The cover edges are in excellent shape, no rubbing. The corners have only small spots of light rubbing. The top page edge has a light purple topstain, the middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. The spine has a slight forward lean, but the book is solidly bound from cover to cover. Both covers are nicely, tightly bound. I'm not seeing any binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any soiling at all. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There's a thin, light crinkle off the bottom edge of the title page. A few of the rough-cut middle edges have a little bit of jaggedness. All the others are perfectly cut. The bottom edges look good. As is always the case some are a little shorter than others. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. There is an old signed name off the top edge of the front end paper. It may be E. Doerfler. There is no other writing to be found anywhere. 'Stephen Hudson is a pseudonym of the British novelist and translator Sydney Schiff, whose work was published in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s. With a substantial income from his commercially successful family, Schiff was a patron of the arts, with friendships in the musical, artistic and literary circles of England and France. He was the host at a celebrated party in Paris on 18 May 1922, when Marcel Proust met James Joyce (without the slightest rapport); other guests included Sergei Diaghilev, Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso. The occasion was the first night of Stravinsky's Renard. Schiff tried unsuccessfully to get Picasso to paint a portrait of Proust. In the early 1920s Schiff was in touch with major modernist figures, and a patron of Wyndham Lewis's The Tyro. Lewis 'repaid' the support by satirizing Schiff as Lionel Kein in The Apes of God. Schiff also introduced John Middleton Murry to Joyce; though Joyce later gave the impression that Katherine Mansfield, Murry's wife, showed more understanding of Joyce's Ulysses. He and his wife Violet also befriended T. S. Eliot and his wife, Vivienne, and Frederick Delius. Earlier, in 1918, Schiff had helped finance Osbert Sitwell's periodical Art and Letters. Later the Schiffs knew Edwin Muir and Wilma. Schiff kept up a long correspondence with Aldous Huxley, which has been published. Schiff's novels are now almost entirely forgotten; but his and his wife's significance as key figures of early Modernism, both as friends and facilitators to several major artists and writers, has recently been reassessed by Stephen Klaidman in a joint biography of the couple, Sydney and Violet: Their Life with T.S. Eliot, Proust, Joyce and the Excruciatingly Irascible Wyndham Lewis.'.…
