Hardback. Condición: New. Ernst Scheidegger (1923-2016) ranks among Switzerland's most distinguished 20th-century photographers. His portraits of artists made his name internationally. Scheidegger's photographs of Alberto Giacometti at his Paris studio or in his native Val Bregaglia in Switzerland continue to shape the public image of this celebrated artist today.Marking the centenary of Ernst Scheidegger, who was also the founder of the Scheidegger and Spiess publishing house, this book offers a fresh and contemporary look at his multi-faceted body of work. It is based on an extensive reappraisal of his estate and features a concise selection of iconic and lesser-known images that demonstrated Scheidegger's prowess as a portraitist. More importantly, however, the volume enables an encounter with Scheidegger's hitherto little-published early work and thus undertakes a reassessment of his entire oeuvre. Essays by Tobia Bezzola, art historian and director of the MASI Lugano, Alessa Widmer, curator and artistic director of Photo Basel art fair, and Helen Grob, Scheidegger's long-time companion, trace his career and self-concept as a photographer. A biography and brief texts on a selection of key examples of Scheidegger's art round off this beautifully designed photo book.…

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Verlag Scheidegger and Spiess, Alberto Giacometti:Traces of a Friendshipis being published in a revised and expanded edition, which includes over forty previously unpublished photographs, an intimate new chapter, and amended captions.Alberto Giacometti (190166) is inarguably one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century. Immensely gifted and prolific, Giacometti gave physical expression to his twin obsessions of the human form and the alienation of modern life. Because of his canonical position in the history of art and the reams of scholarship produced about him, Giacometti remains to many the elusive master artist, distant and remote on the Olympus of creative endeavor. Ernst Scheidegger, a friend of the sculptor, knew a very different Giacometti. Scheidegger accompanied him to his studio, ate and drank with him, and relaxed with him in his family home. Alberto Giacometti: Traces of a Friendship is a document of this intimate life of Giacometti, consisting of photographs that Scheidegger made over the course of two decades. Scheidegger welcomes readers into Giacomettis studio and house in Maloja, Switzerland, allowing them rare access to the most closely held aspects of the artists life. Sketching in his studio, having a cup of coffee, his works in progress, his art in installation views, even his sleeping catsScheidegger captures the essence of the artist's working life in images that are artful in their own right. A revised and expanded new edition of Alberto Giacometti which presents 40 previously unpublished colour images and marks the 50th anniversary of Verlag Scheidegger & Spiess. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
