Seltene erste französische Ausgabe von Scheeles Hauptwerk. - Scheele (1742-1786) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Chemikern des 18. Jahrhunderts und gilt als einer der Begründer der modernen Chemie. Unabhängig von Priestley entdeckte er den Sauerstoff und bewies darüber hinaus, dass die Luft aus zwei verschiedenen Gasen besteht. Darüber und über weitere Versuche zur Luft, Verbrennung und Atmung berichtet er in vorliegendem Werk. Ferguson nennt ihn "an experimental genius" und fügt hinzu: "he made more discoveries of first-rate importance with fewer opportunities and scantier appliances than any one else, and his skill, insight, and power of illuminating experimental results have never been surpassed, if, indeed, they have ever been equalled." Der Supplementband enthält neben den neuen Forschungsergebnissen Scheeles auch die Anmerkungen von Priestley und Kirwan. - Der Hauptband stellenweise mit sehr kleinem Tintenfleck am unteren Rand.
