Port Elizabeth Series, number 2. Number 164 of an edition limited to 500 copies. 8vo; original grey cloth; pp. (viii) + 25; some photographs; map; graph. Cloth partially sunned; scattered foxing; earlier owner's name to front pastedown. Good. "The village of Bethelsdorp is of considerable interest because it was the first organi…sed settlement near what is today Port Elizabeth, and the problems which were associated with it in its early days reflect the conflicting attitudes held by various sections of the white population towards the treatment of Hottentots and Non-Europeans in general. The many controversies which centred around early Bethelsdorp had an impact on South Africa in a much wider field, and it may even be said that the first seeds of the Great Trek were sown in the minds of future trekkers by the missionaries of the settlement while championing the Hottentot cause.".
