Graphite and ink and wash on wove paper (11 3/4" x 19 7/8", 299mm x 505mm. Sometime folded in four (with additional creases, perhaps from rolling), with three losses at left, one just affecting the image. Pricked for transfer. Peripheral soiling, and repairs verso to both short edges. Captain James Allen Scarborough (Allan in some sources; 1805-1852) was master of the Hudson Bay Company schooner Cadboro for a decade (1838-1848), during which time he surveyed the bay immediately south of Vancouver Island. The present manuscript map must convey Scarborough's surveying from the Cadboro, as well as her extensive soundings, recorded in a series of lines and curves in the western half of the map. Scarborough's notes read: "Neah Bay by/ _James Allen Scarborough._/ _Master H. B. Co.y Sch.r "Cadboro"_/[rule 77mm]/ High Water Full and Change. 3h. bay Rise 10 feet/ At which time the Tide Runs about 4 hudts. [?]/ Latitude 48- 25 -00 N--/ Longitude 124- 15" 00 W-/ [double rule 74mm]". Although Scarborough's principal aim is the contour of the bay as it fluctuates over the tidal cycle, as well as the soundings along main routes, there is general interest in the area. Neah itself is subtitled "Spanish Village," and to its east in graphite he marks a stream's course with "Fresh Water" above it. Scarborough calls the island "Why Had. da" (now usually transcribed Waadah), the point immediately opposite the southeast tip of the island "Mena" and the next point along he names after himself: Scarborough Point (now called "Klachopis Point"). Wilkes in the Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition. During the years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 (vol. 4, p. 485), published by Lea and Blanchard in 1845, draws on Scarborough's work, calling the bay instead "Neah Harbour." Wilkes updates the coordinates of Scarborough's survey (48° 24' 40" N., 124° 36' 46" W.; vol. 4, p. 487), suggesting that he was familiar with the present map when, as he reports, the Vincennes surveyed the bay around the 2nd of August 1841. Wilkes's map of the region -- in which he names the bay "Scarborough Harbour" in honor of our cartographer -- was not published until 1858 in the second volume of the Atlas of Charts (Haskell 85), and is independent of the present chart, which doubtless was used for the benefit of the HBC.
