Añadir al carritoCouverture souple. Condición: Bon. Edition originale. DIDEROT, Denis. SAUVAGE, Sylvain (illustrateur).

Condición: Very Good+. Four volumes in one, folio (340 x 215mm). Pagination: I: [16], 423pp., [29]. II: [12], 288pp., [4]. III: [8], 333pp., [3]. IV: [8], 324pp. (errors in pagination as usual). Collation: I: *(8), a-z(6), aa-mm(6), nn(4) o-p(6). II: *(6), A-Z(6), Aa(6), Bb(2). III: +(4), a-z(6), A-E(6). IV: *(4), A-Z(6), AA-DD(6). Each volume separately titled with woodcut printer's device of Michel Sonnius in cartouche frame: snake biting Paul's finger as he shakes it off into the fire, surrounded by a quote from Romans 8:31: SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS, or "If God is forus, who is against us?" Each volume starting with dedication letter of Denis Sauvage (1520-1587) to Anne, Duke of Montmorency (1493-1567), opening with tables, and ending in annotations. Contemporary French calf ruled in gilt with cornerpieces; (lightly rubbed exterior, right margins remargined from pp. 107 to 324, mispagination as common, otherwise sound). An impressive copy. A mammoth volume comprising the four parts of Denis Sauvage's corrected edition of Froissart's Chronicles. Although the Chronicles had been widely printed, Denis Sauvage's work is the first critical edition to come to press. Earlier editions were produced at Lyon from1559 to 1561 and at least six other editions were printed in Paris the same year as this one, including those in a series of simultaneous issues printed by Mallot, Ruelle, de Roigny, Gautier, Granjon, and L'Huillier. The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library catalogue notes thatthis Sonnius edition of 1574 is a shared printing and part of the edition printed in Paris by L'Olivier de Pierre L'Huillier. Denis Sauvage was the French royal historiographer to Henry II of France and a well-known historian, translator, and grammatician. He dedicated this work to Anne, Duke of Montmorency - a nobleman who died in 1567 following a victory at Saint-Denis. In this critical edition, Sauvage endeavored to restore the Chronicles of Froissart to their original state; in the preface he states he supplemented work from previous editions by consulting medieval manuscripts. Although, Sauvage's sources are not known or have not survived and his work was later criticized for containing too many added paratextual elements. In all, a classic work by an eminent medieval historian working in 16thcentury France; this particular Sonnius printing seems to be more scarce in institutional collections than the other Parisian issues of 1574 from other presses. OCLC locates the Sonnius edition in the US at Dartmouth, Indiana State Univ., Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Grinnell College, and the Univ. of Houston. …

A member of the Royal Court Gouffier was knighted in 1533 and rose to the office of Grand Equerry of France by 1546. Throughout life Gouffier became a prominent patron of the arts and book collector. Examples of his collection can be found in institutions across the world including the Louvre, the BNF and the Met. He was decribed by Charles Isaac Elton to be "a collector of an essentially modern type". Yet Gouffier's cultural legacy goes beyond his collection as he was said to have inspired the figure of the "Marquis de Carabas" in Charles Perrault's tale of "Puss in Boots".
