Each and every indigenous community possesses a specific wisdom within a distinct domain in which their sustenance activities are limited and this great heritage of folk knowledge clearly reflects a scientific base which may be termed as ethno science. The present treatise is on the Abujh Maria a primitive tribal group of Bastar district of Chhattisgarh who are shifting hill cultivators and are confined in a particular territory known as Abujhmarh. The life and culture of the Abujh Marias are also cherished under the lap of forest environment. Behind all shadow of beliefs some kind of concept of science is reflected which in turn controls their livelihood and surrounding niche. With this wisdom they not only exploit the natural resources but also conserve and preserve their biodiversity. The close co relationship has been highlighted between their terrestrial set up and celestial world which ultimately has an impact on their subsistence economy and eventually it leads to restrict their family size. Due to their prolonged association with forest environment they have also developed a folk knowledge with scientific explanation which helps them during their ailment where various kinds of local herbs plants tubers and roots etc. at their niche are applied. Cognizance of their environment as well as mode of conservation of their biodiversity speaks a kind of dominance of knowledge in ethno science. 118 pp.

The present study carried out at Kandhmal district of Odisha which was once famous for human sacrifice to appease darnithe earth deity; in fact in the name of such sacrifice chiefly female infanticide was practised by the Kandh and Pano community which was known as merriah. The present empirical study at the hilly-forest terrain of Kandhamal among the Pano or Kui Domanga community, categorized as Scheduled Castethe stigma of untouchability has been imposed without any valid reason. Earlier the Pano was categorized as Hill Tribe and till our investigation all the tribal characteristics are very much evident among them; the cultural attributes are also equally practised and applicable to their immediate and inalienable neighbour the Kandh, who is Scheduled Tribe. The inclusion and exclusion of a community largely depending on birth, descent and kinship which are examined in the treatise. The present treatise will highlight their myth, distinct belief system, customary laws, the concept of purity and pollution nullified in view of their participation in most sacred and important ritual activitieskedu laka or buffalo sacrifice instead of earlier human sacrifice, to appease earth deity-the darni. The indigenous cultural roots of Pano or Kui Domanga also speaks about the claim of and inclusion of them as Scheduled Tribe like the Kandh. The administrators, planners and concerned officials of NGOs will get an insight view of social reality which will enable them in refining their approach of understanding the problem and also may extend their endorsement in favour of Scheduled Tribe status.
