Toning and soiling as well as patches of surface abrasion to text block edges. Front free endpaper and perhaps a flyleaf lacking; first leaf present is frontispiece. Two leaves of unpaged publisher advertisements at rear with rear free endpaper and probably at least one flyleaf lacking too. Old pencil and antiquarian ink writing on initial and rear leaves; some staining and foxing to pages as well. Binding shows some stress points but otherwise firm. Only a good copy.

His American editor, Epes Sargent (181…3-1880), had a literary career of his own as a member of the "Knickerbocker Group." This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of a Later Printing of the First American Edition (from a year earlier). This edition is uncommon, and not usually listed among Sargent's works. . Brown cloth binding, decoratively stamped on the covers and spine. Lettering on the spine is gilt, somewhat faded but completely visible. Clean text; 479 pages. Mildly cocked; with very light wear. Minor scuffing to the covers with moderate to heavy scuffing along the extremities. Leather is rather worn along all the book hinges, with moderate loss to most volumes and heavy loss of leather along the hinges of volume 3 and 6. All heads are pulled and some are missing minor pieces of leather, with a few minor flakes missing from the spines of the volumes. Volume 6 has a 1 inch split in the upper front hinge of the leather. Text blocks, bindings and pages are solid with general darkening to the pages, very minor sporadic soiling and a few pages with creases. An attractive set in leather in GOOD condition.
