Illustrated with a tipped-in map frontispiece and eight tipped-in black-and-white photographs by Clara E. Sipprell, all present. The book is a condensed version of Susannah Willard Johnson's classic captivity narrative, edited by her great-great-granddaughter Mary M. Billings French. Johnson recounts her capture during the 1754 Abenaki raid on Charlestown, New Hampshire, and her subsequent four-year captivity with the French and Indians from 1746 - 1750. French's introduction summarizes the publication history of Johnson's original 1796 narrative. The photographs by Sipprell depict locations connected with Johnson's story.
