A fine pictorial record of Stockton in the early 1890s, probably prepared for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. Most of the photographs were made by California photographer John Pitcher Spooner (1845-1917), active in Stockton from the early 1870s at least to 1894. Not in Rocq. Cover title is "Scenic San Joaquin Valley and the California Sierra "The Garden of the Sun." Printer's imprint "SUNSET PRESS" on page [15]. An elaborate, profusely illustrated booklet printed in orange and black inks. The birdseye map, "Panoramic View of San Joaquin Valley Showing Main Highways, Roads and Some of the Myriad Attractions of the High Sierra, its National Parks and Big Tree Groves," was drawn by W. H. Bull. The brochure, issued cooperatively by Stanislaus County Board of Trade, Merced Chamber of Commerce, Madera County Chamber of Commerce, Fresno County Chamber of Commerce, Kings County Chamber of Commerce, Tulare County Board of Trade and Kern County Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the Sierra Nevada backcountry, including the Minaret Range, the San Joaquin High Sierra and the backcountry of the Kings and Kern river watersheds. The completion of the Don Pedro Dam in March 1923 is mentioned in the text, the Friant Dam is under construction, and the Yosemite Transportation System is still in operation, so this publication was issued after March 1923 and before 1925. The brochure was probably sponsored by the Central Valley counties with help from the Southern Pacific Company who printed this brochure at their Sunset Press. Some wear and creasing along left edge of outer panel, a very good copy. Quite scarce. (#167622).
