First published in 1929 by The Indian Music Publishing House in Madras (Chennai), it serves as a foundational text for understanding the classification and structural organization of melodic scales in Carnatic music. One of the most notable features of the book is its large visual chart. This chart functions as a comprehensive mathematical map or "genealogy tree" of Carnatic music. Book itself shows some fading, browning, rubbing, scuffing and chipping on edges. Previous owner's name is ink stamped on lower page edge. Pages are browned from age and show some signs of Foxing and browning.
