There they studied and taught until forced out of their jobs and out of the United States by investigators of the "Communist conspiracy" during the 1940s and early 1950s. Ryan and Summerlin tell in detail the stories of Tsien Hsue-shen, the leading Chinese rocket expert and former Caltech Goddard Professor of Aeronautics, and Chao Chung-yao, deputy director of The Institute for Atomic Energy in China, another Caltech alumnus.
