Armorial bookplate of Edward Joshua Cooper, Markree Castle, to front paste-down and later shelf label printed 'Markree Library, Re-…arranged in 1913 by Bryan Cooper'; first blank and recto and verso of title leaf with inscriptions of early Meoles family owners. Title page darkened, scattered light foxing and minor staining, a very good copy. An early seventeenth-century binding with two works by German Lutheran theologians and Orientalists. The first is an Isagoge (introduction) to the Bible by Ambrosius Reuden (or Reudenius) (1543-1615). (Isagogics is a branch of theology that is preliminary to exegesis and is concerned with the literary and external history of the Bible). The second is a detailed study of the Book of Daniel, by Salomon Gesner (1559-1605).

Exemplar com picos de traça na lombada e leves danos nas charneiras. Salomon Gessner (Zurique, 1730-1788) foi um poeta, pintor, gravador, jornalista e editor suíço de expressão alemã. Viveu em Zurique grande parte da sua vida, com exceção dos anos 1749/50, vivendo nesses dois anos em Berlim e Hamburgo, tendo servido como aprendiz de empregado de livraria. Regressa então a Zurique, onde abre uma editora em conjunto com o pai e se torna redator na Gazeta da Segunda-Feira, esta impressa por seu pai. Mais tarde torna-se diretor da Biblioteca Pública de Zurique. Cultiva a pintura e artes gráficas como principais projetos, começando a escrever poesia em 1751, publicando Lied eines Schweizers an sein bewaffnetes Mädchen, que lhe granjeou reputação junto dos intelectuais da época. Continua a poesia bucólica enquanto desenha as paisagens para acompanhar os textos como gravuras, sendo estes publicados em 1756, no seu livro intitulado Idyllen, que lhe trará grande fama. Esta obra é reeditada em 1772, já com 52 destas peças, sendo considerada a mais completa das suas obras. Entre as obras publicadas destaca-se também Der tod Abels, onde expressa o seu descontentamento com o avanço da modernidade na tradição pastoril.
