The sketches are set at the front, where Saki served and was killed in action in 1916. Also included are two short macabre plays and a full-length play more in Saki's usual witty style. An impressionistic 117-page memoir of Hector by his sister Ethel M. Munro includes some of his letters and drawings. The wartime sketches read much like stories and are unusual for their avoidance of expected wartime sentiments. A useful resource for any student of Saki, who was arguably the most accomplished and prolific comic writer of the Edwardian period, easily shifting from acrobatic mischief to pointed satire. His ability to work sombre overtones into his mayhem is often missed by critics who only peg him as a humorist -- but, then, the best comedy frequently mixes the bitter with the sweet.
