Loose but still complete and barely holding. Two former owners names and dates ( 1857 & 1910 on front endpapers) A pencil ghost on first blank page on acquiring the book and price paid. Moderate foxing on the pages. Moderate chipping and fraying and edgewear. Soiling to page ends and bumping to corners. Harper & Brothers. A scarce book.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Thus. Blind-stamped decorative cloth. 235pp + 4pp ads. Signature of owner, Robert A. Bacon, three times, twice in pencil (ffep & t.p.) & once in ink (t.p.). Also ink stamp of Frederick Thompson, Mill Valley, on front paste down. In the middle of the facing endpapers, front & back, is a dark residue. Their location matches the size & very rough shape of the central motif of the cover blind-stamping. There is what appears to be a quite old blind-stamp seal on the lower title page. Moderate general foxing. This title is a classic of the frontier, & was republished in facsimile years ago in the Time-Life Classics series. An internet search leads to the Thompson family of Mill Valley & the Bank of America. Good. Howes 554.

Hardcover. Condición: Good+. First Edition. 235 pp + ads, bound in origina black cloth. Spine is faded and has some old repairs, chip in cloth at rear joint, light scattered foxing. Contemporary ownership inscription on the front free endpaper: "Joseph L. Philbrook, North Hampton, N.H., Jan 19th 1850." Ruxton was the first traveler to write extensively of the mountain men of the Rockies. After having visited Veracruz, Mexico to observe the Mexican-American War in 1846, he traveled north to Santa Fe and then on to Bent's Fort in Colorado. From January through May 1847 he hunted along the front range of Colorado, visited with mountain men and endured an extremely cold winter. Wagner-Camp 173: 1: "This series of sketches first appearsed in Blackwood's Magazine numbers 63 and 64, June-November 1848.Of particular interest is an account of the Walker expedition of trappers to California, which Ruxon may have heard from Mark Head, probably one of the independent trappers accompanying Zenas Leonard." Four raised bands (five compartments) with gilt lettering to compartments two (title) and four (author). Stone-marbled endpapers. Contains rather gruesome blow by blow accounts of white retribution (ambushing, shooting and scalping) against a gathering of Indians preparing to leave on another attacking, scalp-gathering war party. One or two tiny, barely noticeable dents to leather boards. Pages clean, bright and supple.

Condición: Good+. 1849 first British edition. Original brown half leather, with leather spine and corners and marbled paper over boards. Shelf wear and rubbing to the spine edges and corners, with the corners worn through. A few scuffed and rubbed spots to the leather and marbled boards. The hinges are sound and the text block is tight. The pages are clean and tightly bound. And excellently-preserved history of the fur trade and the early American West. ; A beautiful leather the binding, with title in gold on spine.; 312 pages.
