Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. 363pp. Octavo [23 cm] Blue cloth with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip. Near fine. This uncommon work by the American journalists Ruth Kauffman and Reginald Wright Kauffman reflects their belief as Marxists that the Mormon church was a victim of a capitalistic society. The Kauffmans' intention was to summarize the widespread anti-Mormon sentiment that appeared in the American press during the late nineteenth century. They believed that capitalism was an unethical system of compulsion and domination. They were unlikely allies of the Saints and their work and brought an unprecedented perspective to the Church. Añadir al carritoHardcover. First edition. A worn copy: right side of the front board lightened from dampening, chips and tears on the spine. Inscribed by both authors to Reginald Wright Kauffman's uncle Samuel Wright, a book reviewer and scholar: "To my very dearest uncle, and our dearest friend. Ruth Wright Kauffman" (and) "Sept. 1912. Moi aussi! Reginald Wright Kauffman." Upon Samuel Wright's death, the Kauffman's inherited his library, thus his books became their own copies. Kauffman was born and lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, although he also maintained homes in Switzerland and Bath, Maine. After graduating from Harvard in 1900, he wrote dozens of stories, mysteries, children's books, and non-fiction titles. He was the editor of the Bangor, Maine *Daily News* from 1941-1947. His novel *The House of Bondage* was widely praised, specifically by Emma Goldman, as the first serious attempt to explore the problem of women and prostitution. Very scarce.
