Wrappers. Condición: Good. Music for Percussion, Inc., Published 1962. Wraps, 15 pp. per score; 31 cm; music notation throughout.Complete performance set of three identical 15-page scores, each with all three parts printed together, issued in a single outer paper wrapper. The scores themselves are in Very Good condition: pages clean, unmarked, and bright, with no annotations. The outer paper wrapper is in poor condition, with the spine nearly split front and back (repaired with tape), several chips and tears to the edges, creasing along the edges, and mild to moderate soiling and toning throughout. Inner scores laid in as issued; no binding. Publisher's catalog number E-39.The Percussion Suite by American composer Armand Russell (1932-2022) is an early work by a significant composer of twentieth-century percussion and double bass music. Born in Seattle, Russell took his BA and MA at the University of Washington and his DMA at the Eastman School of Music, where his composition teachers included Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson. A professional double bassist who played with the Seattle Symphony, the Boston Pops Tour Orchestra, and the Honolulu Symphony, he joined the faculty of the University of Hawaii Music Department in 1961, the year before this suite was published, and would go on to chair the department for seven years before retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1994. The Percussion Suite appeared in 1962 as part of the landmark Ensemble Series issued by Paul Price's Music for Percussion, Inc., which helped establish serious percussion ensemble repertoire alongside early works by Michael Colgrass, Charles Wuorinen, and Jack McKenzie.Three movements. The three players between them cover temple blocks, glockenspiel, xylophone, tom-toms, triangles, suspended cymbals, gong, snare drum, bass drum, and wood blocks, with instrument assignments changing movement by movement. The editor's note specifies that each player should use a complete score for precise ensemble performance, which is exactly what this three-score set provides.Contents: I. Toccata; II. Nocturne; III. Scherzo.
