Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. Abbott, Angus Evan et al. Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Two. Secaucus, NJ: Castle Books (Book Sales, Inc.), 1979. First Castle Books edition (April 1979, as stated on copyright page). Edited and introduced by Alan K. Russell, this volume collects forty-six stories of crime and detection drawn from original illustrated magazines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Featuring authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle, E.W. Hornung (creator of A.J. Raffles), Jacques Futrelle, Baroness Orczy, and Guy Boothby, the anthology presents a wide-ranging survey of the 'Golden Age' precursors and contemporaries to Sherlock Holmes. The collection emphasizes lesser-known detectives, rogues, and criminal masterminds who populated periodicals like Cassell's Magazine and similar illustrated publications. Reproductions of original artwork and period illustrations are included throughout, enhancing both the historical authenticity and visual appeal. As a companion volume to The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, this second installment expands the field with additional authors and stories, offering insight into the breadth of early detective fiction and the literary environment that shaped Conan Doyle's famous sleuth. Condition: Book is Very Good, with clean, bright pages, light toning at margins, and a tight binding. Red cloth boards are strong with minor shelf wear and slight rubbing at extremities. The dust jacket is Good, showing moderate edge wear, creasing, toning, and small chips - particularly at the spine ends and corners; some surface rubbing is evident, though the front panel remains visually striking. Russell (b.1937), whose real name is Lionel Leventhal, was a prominent literary editor and anthologist known for founding Arms and Armour Press and Greenhill Books.
