Este libro se concibió como la aportación de los autores del mismo, profesores de las áreas de Ciencias y Técnicas Historiográficas e Historia e Instituciones Económicas de la Universidad de Valladolid, al proyecto ?Poder, sociedad y fiscalidad en la Meseta Norte castellana en el tránsito del Medievo a la Modernidad? . Pensamos que la contribución podría estar relacionada con el estudio y descripción de documentos en los que aparecieran mercaderes y cambiadores, y para ello elegimos los protocolos notariales conservados en el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Valladolid y optamos por ofrecer la información individualizada de cada uno de los documentos en un catálogo. En un primer momento nos planteamos la revisión de los protocolos de todas las localidades de la provincia de Valladolid datados con anterioridad a 1550, y así se hizo con los de Tordesillas, Simancas y la propia villa de Valladolid ?en este último caso llegando hasta la década de los años 30? Nos vimos obligados a replantear el proyecto inicial de alcanzar la mitad de siglo cuando el volumen de documentos procedentes de los protocolos de Medina del Campo, que hasta 1520 ronda los 6.000, nos desbordó. En la tarea de selección de documentos nos hemos topado con algunas dificultades, comenzando con la propia identificación de los mercaderes y cambiadores, bien porque el notario no especifique el oficio o bien porque le atribuya otro próximo a actividades comerciales. Hemos optado por no incluir el documento en el catálogo a no ser que tuviéramos la certeza de que el individuo era mercader o cambiador, en cuyo caso el oficio va entre corchetes. Otro escollo es la dispersión de los documentos referentes a un mismo negocio en un legajo e incluso en legajos diferentes que, en ocasiones, las menos, no nos ha permitido agruparlos en un único registro, como ha sido el criterio utilizado en la mayoría de los casos. Ejemplo de ello son los abundantes testimonios relativos a un determinado proceso que los notarios de Medina de Rioseco nos proporcionan a lo largo de sus protocolos intercalados con otras escrituras u otros autos judiciales. Pensamos que el catálogo tendría que ir acompañado de unos capítulos introductorios concebidos para acercar al investigador a los notarios y sus protocolos, a la tipología de los documentos y a los protagonistas de los mismos, mercaderes y cambiadores. Este tipo de trabajos, entendemos, se ha de completar necesariamente, y así se ha hecho, con unos índices que posibiliten la búsqueda de la información. Hemos tenido la fortuna de poder acompañar la edición con la copia digital en un CD que hará que las búsquedas sean más fáciles, rápidas y variadas, pudiendo orientarse a los intereses de cada investigador.
