Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Bernard Law Montgomery was a dedicated battlefield tactician, though a controversial one. In North Africa in 1942, he commanded the Eighth Army to a great triumph against Rommel at El Alamein, which Churchill hailed as the beginning of the end of the war. During the planning stages for the invasion of Sicily, Montgomery proved himself to be a splendid organizer and a great believer in simplicity. But he was also known as a complicated man whose legacy remains tainted by his insensitive and boastful nature and desire for personal glory - all of which can have dangerous consequences on the battlefield. In the end, though, it was due to Montgomery's influence that the weight of the allied attack at Normandy was increased and the allied success of D-Day owes much to his far-sightedness. In the field, especially during the planning stages, he was at his best. An inspirational commander whose self-confidence was legendary, Montgomery's military life has proved to be a great lesson for leaders in the years since.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Provides an account of how the war changed Scotland irrevocably by exploring a wide range of themes, including the response to the call for volunteers, the performance of Scottish military formations in 1915 and 1916, and the militarization of the Scottish homeland, and the resistance to war in Glasgow and the west of Scotland.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. General George Smith Patton came to the fore in the fighting in North Africa and Sicily in 1942 and 1943 as a tough and inspirational field commander who drove his army as relentlessly as he did himself. Arrogant, vainglorious and unpopular with his fellow Allied generals, he was nevertheless one of the great land force commanders of the Second World War. Patton inspired an unswerving loyalty in his men, perhaps difficult to understand in the light of his treatment of them, which was often bullying and sometimes cruel. However, when the raw and untested US soldiers came to face the much-feared German panzer divisions in North Africa, he gave his men the self-belief to take them on. He refused to allow his army to think that they were second best. Trevor Royle portrays the real Patton, a man who behind the bluster was thoughtful and deeply religious with wide interests in literature and military history. Patton's fatal car crash in post-war Germany in 1945 meant that Old Blood and Guts never faced the 'horrors of peace' he so feared. …

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Trevor Royle examines Scotland's role in the Second World War from a wide range of perspectives. The country's geographical position gave it great strategic importance for importing war materiel and reinforcements, for conducting naval and aerial operations against the enemy and for training regular and specialist SOE and commando forces. Scotland also became a social melting pot with the arrival of Polish and eastern European refugees, whose presence added to the communal mix and assisted post-war reconstruction. In addition to the important military aspects - the exploits of the Army's renowned 15th Scottish and 51st Highland Divisions in Europe and North Africa and the role played by the RAF and the Royal Navy from Scottish bases - Scotland was also hugely important as an industrial power house and the nation's larder. The war also had a huge impact on politics, with national centralization achieved through the creation of the Scottish Office and the Scottish Grand Committee. With the emergence of the post-war Labour government and the welfare state, nationalism went into decline and the dominance of socialism, especially in the west, paved the way for the command politics which dominated Scotland for the rest of the century. Based on previously unseen archives in the Scottish Record Office, A Time of Tyrants is the first comprehensive history of the unique part played by Scotland and the Scots in the global war to defeat Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.…
