Jacksons Bay, near the southernmost extremity of the West Coast of the South Island traces its origins as a settlement back to 1874 when a large area there was set was set aside as Government "special settlement" scheme. The first would-be inhabitants arrived the following year, but although it had appeared to offer good prospects -- a safe harbour, good pastoral land, abundant timber and fishing --- it was not long before problems arose and within 10 years all but the hardiest of the settlers had left.
