The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling is a comic novel by the playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. Alongside Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, Tom Jones is one of the first works of prose describable as a novel. Although the novel is lengthy, it is highly organised. Coleridge argued that it has 'three most perfect plots ever planned.' It is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book.
