E. machte sich als Essayist über die verschiedensten Themen der europ. Literatur und insbesondere der schweiz. Geistes- und Kulturgeschichte einen Namen ("Die Schweiz als geistige Mittlerin von Muralt bis Jacob Burckhardt" 1931). Seine Essay-Bände, z. B. die dreibändigen Studien zur dt., schweiz. und allg. Geistesgeschichte (1946), wurden auch im Ausland rezipiert. E. edierte Werke von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Ranke und Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi. Ferner engagierte er sich für die Geistige Landesverteidigung. 1951 erhielt er den Literaturpreis der Stadt Zürich» (HLS).
