Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Albert A. Méras, Ph.D. (Teachers College, Columbia University) and Suzanne Roth, M.A. (The Lincoln School of Teachers College). Petits Contes de France. Illustrated by H. L. Drucklieb and John W. Adams. New York, Cincinnati, Chicago, Boston, and Atlanta: American Book Company, 1916. First edition. Small 8vo, blue-gray cloth, 204 pp., illustrated throughout in black and white. A delightful early-20th-century French reader designed for classroom instruction, Petits Contes de France features short moral and humorous tales written in clear, idiomatic French and accompanied by expressive line drawings. The stories, including "Les Deux Pêches" and "L'Enfant des Grenadiers de la Garde". reflect the period's emphasis on linguistic immersion and cultural storytelling as a teaching tool. The illustrations by H. L. Drucklieb and John W. Adams, both frequent contributors to educational texts of the era, capture the humor and pathos of each vignette with lively turn-of-the-century charm. Condition: Good. Cloth worn at corners and spine ends with small frays, mild fading, and a few light stains. Endpapers foxed and inscribed in pencil ("Eloise Fadley, Washington D.C., Nov. 8, 1922"), text block toned but complete and legible. A sturdy and evocative example of an early American French-language schoolbook. Albert A. Méras (1884-1955) was an American linguist and professor of French at Teachers College, Columbia University, known for pioneering communicative teaching methods in French instruction. Suzanne Roth, of the Lincoln School of Teachers College, collaborated with Méras on several widely adopted textbooks combining cultural context with vocabulary building and graded reading. Their joint works helped shape early 20th-century modern-language pedagogy in U.S. schools. H. L. Drucklieb and John W. Adams (ilustrador).
