The idea of the Parramatta Soroptimists Club compiling a history of their city was formed during the Australian bi-centennial year of 1988 but gathering the material, fro…m a large number of contributors, meant that the book was not published until 1992. Formed in 1788, as Rose Hill, what was later to become Parramatta, was one of the earliest settlements of New South Wales, which gave it the subsidiary name of "Cradle City of Australia", which is included in the book's sub-title. The objective was to tell the story, largely through the experiences of veteran residents,and to "incorporate all facets of life from babyhood through to school days, courting and marriage".
