Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. Although 1,000 copies of this book of unnecessary poetry were reportedly printed, this would appear to be one of only 100 of the "first state" of "Fumes of Formation" bound with rounded spine (an additional 60 with "square spines" having been bound up from remaining sheets found in the author's house.) This one carries a "fair" original dust jacket which is missing the top half of its rear panel. While Ros -- who never let a single word stand where she could string together three alliterative terms to confuse her meaning -- has long been accepted as not only Ireland's worst author (The Inklings held competitions to see who could read Ros' work aloud for the longest time without laughing out loud), but the worst author ever to have written in English, the honor of "worst poet" has long since been awarded to Dundee hand-weaver William McGonagall ("The Tay Bridge Disaster.") As she inverts and mangles her sentence order to find that perfect, clunking rhyme, surely Mrs. Ross' poetry ("Ros" having been her clever pen name) is worthy of some reconsideration. 44 pp., reduced from $150.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. W.M.R. Quick Ilustrador. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. Irene Iddesleigh is the infamous debut novel of Mrs. Amanda McKittrick Ros (Anna Margaret Ross, 1860-1939), celebrated for its extravagantly ornate prose and unintended comedy. First issued in Belfast in 1897 at the author's expense, it later drew cult admirers, including members of the Inklings, who read it aloud for amusement. This Nonesuch Press edition of 1926 is limited to 1,250 numbered copies and was the first fine-press reissue of the book. It includes three woodcut engravings by W. M. R. Quick. Rare copy of the first Phoenix Library Edition. [The Phoenix Library]. Anna Margaret Ross (née McKittrick; 8 December 1860 2 February 1939), known by her pen-name Amanda McKittrick Ros, was an Irish writer. She published her first novel Irene Iddesleigh at her own expense in 1897. She wrote poetry and a number of novels. Her works were not read widely, and her eccentric, over-written, "purple" circumlocutory writing is alleged by some critics to be some of the worst prose and poetry ever written. (Wikipedia).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Small octavo, priced 7S 6D net to bottom of front flap. Dated 1935 and signed "Amanda Malvina Ros / Author" in ink to the half-title page. The dust jacket, moderately foxed to the main panels, is also considerably age-darkened to spine. Her husband, a railroad station master, launched the author's literary career by financing the publication of her first novel, "Irene Iddesleigh," as a gift to Ros on their tenth wedding anniversary. Prior to the first chapter of this work, the author offers an astonishing 20-page rebuttal to the criticism by humorist Barry Pain of her previous work, "Irene Iddesleigh" (he reported that he was initially entertained, but soon "shrank before it in tears and terror") suggesting that Pain was hostile to the work only because he was secretly in love with her. Mark Twain considered "Irene Iddesleigh" (1897) "one of the greatest unintentionally humorous novels of all time." Seeking to explain, in the work in hand, that Delina earned money by doing needlework, author Ros writes: "She tried hard to keep herself a stranger to her poor old father's slight income by the use of the finest production of steel, whose blunt edge eyed the reely covering with marked greed, and offered its sharp dart to faultless fabrics of flaxen fineness." Aldous Huxley explained "In Mrs. Ros we see, as we see in the Elizabethan novelists, the result of the discovery of art by an unsophisticated mind and of its first conscious attempt to produce the artistic. It is remarkable how late in the history of every literature simplicity is invented. The first attempts of any people to be consciously literary are always productive of the most elaborate artificiality." Northrop Frye said of Ros' novels that they use "rhetorical material without being able to absorb or assimilate it: the result is pathological, a kind of literary diabetes." The Inklings held competitions to see who could read Ros' work aloud for the longest time without laughing out loud. 302 pp. Reduced from $490.As with all our items priced higher than $90, this item will be shipped "signature required.". Paper title label to spine. With the typographic dust-jacket priced at 7s 6d to front flap. Publisher's small slip to rear blank. Internally clean but for some light spotting to preliminaries and a few small marks throughout. Gentle toning to boards and spine label. Toning across jacket with a few minor marks to rear panel. Light edgewear. Very good. Ros is somewhat of an unsung literary legend, her work lauded by figures such as Mark Twain and the Inklings - but for being so bad it was unintentionally good. She wrote in a prose so flowery, one struggles to make it through a single sentence without frowning. See the Guardian article 'Is Amanda McKittrick Ros the worst novelist in history?' for more. This edition also includes Ros's scathing 20-page takedown of literary critic Barry Pain who had the audacity to give a poor review of her first novel 'Irene Iddesleigh'.

Añadir al carritohardcover. Condición: very good. Belfast, Carswell 1933. Octavo, very good in publisher's orange cloth with design and lettering in black, matching dustwrapper (this with pieces missing). The neat inscription 'Chatto & Windus' on the front fly suggests that this was their file copy. They republished her second novel 'Delina Delaney' in 1935 and it makes sense that they would have a proprietorial interest in her books. Mercer's bibiography of Ros (appended to Jack Loudan's biography of her) tells us that copies exist in two original bindings, in quantities of about 100 and 60 copies respectively. This copy is in the first binding. The remaining unbound sheets were supposedly destroyed but unbound copies have appeared. In any case this is not a common book with dustwrapper - even one that is defective.Verse, and the last thing Mrs Ros published (a few things appeared posthumously), it includes what must be her most famous poem, On Visiting Westminster Abbey . : "Holy Moses! Have a look! / Flesh decayed in every nook! / Some rare bits of brain lie here / Mortal loads of beef and beer, .".
