Also contains index. John Codman Ropes (April 28, 1836 - October 28, 1899) was an American military historian and lawyer, and the co-founder of the law firm Ropes & Gray. The author was a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts. The focus of his work was the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, which he founded in 1876. The work of this society was the collection and discussion of evidence relating to the Civil War. Most members of this society except himself had fought through the war, and many were general officers of great distinction, it was from first to last maintained and guided by Ropes. This books is a companion volume to Francis Palfrey's "The Peninsula". McClellen moved the Army of the Potomac by sea to drive up the Yorktown peninsula on Richmond. Pope remained behind with what was renamed the "Army of Virginia" to defend Washington (The only instance of a Union army being named after a state instead of a river.) It was hoped that he could keep Washington covered while advancing on Richmond, and link up there with McClellen. But Stonewall Jackson was loose in the Shenandoah, which posed the threat of an end run attack on Washington. Lincoln feared for Washington's safety and kept Pope's force pinned at Fredericksburg, while Jackson slipped from the valley to join Lee in the defeat of McClellen. Once McClellen was beaten and withdrawing by sea, Lee and Jackson turned against Pope. Pope was defeated at the battle of Manassas (2nd Bull Run) and retreated into the city of Washington. This excellent study of small unit actions shows exactly what the opposing commanders were thinking and worrying about. The appendix contains actual exchanges of battlefield communications.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, (ii),532 pgs, index, two portrait plates. Limited to 1275 copies. Original maroon cloth with embossed design on front cover and with gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light wear to edges, corners and spine ends; tilt on spine a bit faded. Interior has former owner's name on front endpaper, else pages are clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: John Chipman Gray, a lawyer before the Civil War, was commissioned into Company H, 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry on October 7, 1862. He left that unit to accept a commission as a major in the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department on July 25, 1864. Gray was wounded at the Third Battle of Winchester on September 19, 1864, and resigned from the Army on July 14, 1865. John Codman Ropes studied law during the war and was a good friend of John Gray, and after the war became a noted military historian who is well known for his work on the Civil War. These war-time letters written by the two form the basis of this fine work. REFERENCES: DORN II 2071; NEVINS I pg 97: "The unique correspondence of two prominent Bostonians who wrote of the war with deep insight; Gray was an officer, and Ropes gained eminence as an historian." MULLINS/REED #36: "Both Bostonians, Gray was an officer while Ropes studied law during the war. One tells of active participation in the war while the other tells what he thinks of it. Their letters contain much that is instructive and valuable." EISNER 497: "The intellectual nature of both men, Rope's absorbing interest, and Gray's staff service make this correspondence exceedingly interesting. The acute observational powers of these men and their precision of language and restraint of temperament make this collection valuable.".
