Some moderate toning to edges. Slight edge wear to jacket. Joyce Grenfell was a unique performer famous for her monologues and cameo appearances on the St Trinian's movies, and regular appearances on the panel game Face the Music. Before she stepped on stage for the first time however, she was a prodifious letter writer. To 'Darling Ma' in North Carolina she wrote regularly after her parents divorce. Ma was the sister of Nancy Astor, the mistress of Cliveden, and Joyce's letters often report on the political and diplomatic goings on among the so-called Cliveden set during the latter 30's. She writes of the social scene, several score relations, of friends, her belief in Christian Science, and once she becomes a professional theatre performer her letters are peppered with famous names. The letters continue through the inevitable changes, pressures, partings and losses brought about by the war. Size: 8vo.
