The 'passeggiata' is the Italian promenade, the evening stroll through oneâs town, an opportunity to catch up on the news of the day, to meet friends and 'fare bella figura' (cut a fine figure). Sometimes the Italians who migrated to distant Australia felt that they were taking a permanent passeggiata, frozen as they were in the empty rituals of a life lived elsewhere, away from the authentic traditions of home. This book acknowledges that sense of exile, and suggests how universities can play a role in linking people across continents and cultures. SCARCE.…

Heavy, and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 252 pp. A well researched book by Professor Jarlath Ronayne that is both fascinating and controversial. It is about the amazing influence of a network of Irish graduates in law from Trinity College Dublin, on learning and politics in 19th-century Australia. The author weaves in and out of the established Australian colonial story, negotiating major events and characters and arcane byways with equal assurance, and with irony and wit. He writes a radically different perspective on that inexhaustibly interesting subject - the Irish in Australia - and the Australian story generally. The author is an Irish-born academic who is now foundation vice-chancellor of Victoria University, Melbourne, and a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). (Second edition stated, dated 2002. Autograph dedication states: To dear Patrick and Dierdre. Thank you for the inspiration. Very best wishes, Jarlath 9 May 2002.).…
