In 514 pages. Condition is VG: very clean with a stain on one page, slight darkening to exterior page edges. One page has 1 sentence underlined in pen & former owner's name in pen on first page. The chapter on "The President & Congress" is about half underlined, but in pencil, so easily erasable. John Rombola's whimsical pieces have appeared on book covers and stages, in magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and even Bergdorf Goodman's Fifth Avenue windows. His imaginatively intricate and captivating drawings burst with fierce color, peculiar beings, patterns and repetition â" the product of a lifetime toiling to capture and hold his viewer in a trance. Rombola was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1933. His mother, a pattern cutter in the high-end garment business, surrounded herself with style magazines featuring the era's great photographers. Intrigued at an early age by these images, Rombola honed his interests at Pratt Institute. Early Andy Warhol and Saul Steinberg illustrations share the detailed, fantastic sophistication of Rombola's work, but while Steinberg found his niche at the New Yorker and Warhol experimented and diverted toward fame, Rombola persisted with his style and preserved the eccentricity of his vision. Maynard, a "big-city culture cat", pursues two girls who are friends and carries off their hearts. Meanwhile, an Upper East side hosiery store owner, Irving Melman, is allowing a friend to use his phone as a horse racing bookie. For letting his phone be used, Irving gets more than rent money, but he is nevertheless unhappy. Back to Maynard; he's very happy but a trifle guilty since neither of the girls know about each other. Turmoil ensues between the friends, at the hosiery store, and some friends of Izzy The Bookie. Ivan Karp (1926-2012) was a New York art dealer, gallerist, and author who was considered instrumental in emergence of the PopArt movement and also played a role in the development of New York City's Soho district as an area of art galleries. Roy Lichtenstein created the front panel dust jacket art with lettering by John Rombola; the rear jacket was a silkscreen created by Andy Warhol from a photograph of the author by Steve Shapiro.
