Hardcover. Condición: As New. First Edition. A Fine condition copy from the personal library of the owner of California Collectible Books, in Martinez, California, Lloyd Mason. Bound in an octavo hardcover format, bright red cloth covers with a blind-stamped illustration to front cover, bright and distinctive gilt lettering to s…pine, deckled fore-edge, and plentiful illustrations in black-and-white. This work of social history recounts the period in the 1880s when lawless bands of vigilantes marauded throughout the State of Indiana and then spread to adjacent and non-contiguous states, including, eventually, to California, akin to the ways in which the Knights of the Golden Circle spread terror prior to the Civil War. As the "White Caps" spread they spread fear and terror and twisted senses of morality. The so-called "Lake County incident" involved these Ku Klux KIan-like vigilante White Capmen, all white males who took it upon themselves to enforce what they took to be shared community standards, appropriate behavior and traditional rights. It was racist, sexist, and bigoted to the core. Frontis matter + 132 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Pages and covers are virtually pristine and intact except for a few minuscule spots of rubbing on back cover. Binding is tight. An As New copy. A captivating read about a sordid episode of California history involving the infamous White Caps. The White Caps (also, Whitecaps or Whitecappers) organized in southern Indiana around 1837. Named for their white hoods, White Caps used violent and nonviolent intimidation tactics, often at night, to carry out extrajudicial punishment on those they deemed unfit or undesirable. The infamous reputation of the White Caps was cemented in the years leading up to, during, and after the Civil War when they shifted their central targets to ethnic minorities, especially African Americans. The whitecapping movement spread to surrounding states and then farther west and to the south. The White Caps inspired similar groups to form such as the Ku Klux Klan. This particular history involving the White Caps took place in a quiet roadside saloon called Campers' Retreat just a few miles south of a small mining town, Middletown, in Lake County, California. While there was not a racial component in this case, the murders that took place there on October 10, 1890 shook the entirety of Lake County and received national attention. The saloon had no guests that night because residents were at the annual gala in Middletown. The only people at the saloon were the owner, J. W. Riche, his wife Helen Riche, and bartender (and bouncer) Fred Bennett. The peace was broken when a group of armed hooded men came inside and fired warning shots. The ensuing scuffle and commotion resulted in the fatal shootings of Helen and one of the White Caps' ring leaders, who was latter discovered on the saloon's front porch. Sadly, J. W. passed away soon after; it was thought by locals that he had succumbed to a gunshot wound that had only partially healed and the grief from losing his wife. Ten men were brought to trial. During the trial, it was revealed that the White Caps were all local miners and had originally come for Bennett in retaliation for the way he treated them as bouncer when they had visited the saloon and for other personal disagreements. Four of the men served time in San Quentin. Charges were either dropped for the remaining men or they posted bail. Notably, author Helen Rocca Goss was the daughter of the assistant district attorney in the case, Andrew Rocca, who helped prosecute the men during the trial.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. The Life and Death of a Quicksilver Mine by Helen Rocca Goss, hardcover in dustjacket, INSCRIBED by the Author Published by Historical Society of Southern California, Los Angeles, 1958 Historical Society of Southern California- Special Book Publication, N…o.3. The Life And Death Of A Quicksilver Mine is a non-fiction book written by Helen Rocca Goss. The book is a detailed account of the history of the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine, which was located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. The mine was one of the largest producers of mercury in the world and played an important role in the development of California's mining industry. The book begins with a brief overview of the discovery of the mine and its early history. It then goes on to describe the various mining techniques that were used at the mine, as well as the working conditions for the miners. The book also explores the social and cultural impact that the mine had on the surrounding area, including the establishment of a company town and the development of a unique mining culture. As the title suggests, the book also covers the eventual decline and closure of the mine. The author discusses the various factors that contributed to the mine's decline, including changes in the global market for mercury and environmental concerns. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition. Small quarto. Designed and printed by Lawton & Alfred Kennedy. Illustrated. Red cloth, lettered in gilt. A fine copy. Details the Lake County incident during the late 19th century involving the KIan-like vigilante White Cap movement. Whitecapping is a phenomenon that occurr…ed specifically in America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally a ritualized form of enforcing community standards, appropriate behavior and traditional rights. However, as it spread throughout North America it took on a distinct racial characteristic. It started in Indiana around 1873, as white males began forming secret societies in order to attempt to deliver justice. These groups were known as the "White Caps". The first White Cap encounters were generally aimed at those who went against a community's values such as abusive family men, women giving birth out of wedlock, et al. This important work details the Lake County incident, the only episode in California which was related to the White Cap movement. Book.
