Britain at Play" is a must-have collection of spectacular and hilarious drawings by the celebrated illustrator William Heath Robinson. Though known for his humorous pictures of ingenious and improbable contraptions (featuring steam kettles, candles and lengths of knotted string), Heath Robinson's mechanical devices were only part of his huge and wide-ranging output. Heath Robinson's work for such publications as "The Tatler", "The Sketch" and "The Bystander" features the British at play in the home and outside it, indulging in outlandish sports, going to extraordinary lengths to hunt down an elusive prey, or finding opportunities for romance in surprising circumstances. Presented together for the first time, these stunning illustrations show Britain in the garden, at the beach and on the golf course. We find distinguished gentlemen playing aquatic golf, fish squash or mountain cricket, gathering edelweiss, trapping whelks and catching tigers - or perhaps indulging in some Jazz-tennis. We find automobile disasters ('catastrophes') aplenty, and bizarre acts of kindness by well-meaning boy scouts. We find city commuters sprinting across sand dunes, ladies reading whilst waltzing, lovers stealing a bus-top kiss in the midst of a traffic jam. Charming, eccentric, endlessly inventive, Heath Robinson's unforgettable drawings in this collection perfectly capture the peculiar character of the great British nation at leisure. Ref A1. W. Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Hard Cover. Duckworth Overlook/Cartoon Museum 2007. 1st Edition. Book condition: VG - Very Good. Full Colour illustrations. Dust Jacket condition: G - Good. TWO Heath Robinson books Contraptions and Helpful Solutions. "Contraptions" - Duckworth Overlook (9780715636947) A new edition of the most brilliant work of one of the most inventive minds in illustration and cartoon wizardry. Heath Robinson was one of Britain's most successful graphic artists. His work has had a huge influence on comic art in this country, but also on the image and self-image of the British. As the champion of pragmatic man, Heath Robinson presented a vision of the British as an unflappable, ingenious and slightly demented breed of inventors that persists to the present day. The British are still a nation of garage-haunting amateur engineers who will recognise the inhabitants of Heath Robinson's world, with their pot bellies and pots of tea, archaic faces and sturdily commonsensical approach to the problems of existence. How to hunt tigers by elephant, how to get an even tan, rise with the sun or put out a chimney fire, these and many more pressing questions are answered in the pages of Contraptions. With illustrations salvaged from the family archives and commentary by Heath Robinson expert, Geoffrey Beare, "Contraptions" is the best possible introduction to the work of one of Britain's great comic talents. "Helpful Solutions" - Cartoon Museum (9780953726349) While spanning Heath Robinson's career, this volume emphasizes his later works and the 'solemn innocents' at the heart of his Improvisation drawings those based on ingenuity rather than machinery. Alongside 79 cartoons it offers a commentary that places his work in context. 192 pages. Size: 9" x 11" (230mm x 290mm). (4.5). Heath Robinson (ilustrador). …
